Born and raised in Karachi (Southern Pakistan), Halar is an artist, cultural researcher, and an archivist currently based in Maastricht, The Netherlands. Moving across installation, text, video and archival material, Halar’s practice delves into the intersections of memory, displacement, and post-colonial realities of South Asia. Rooted in his family’s migration following the 1947 Partition of India, his work questions the idea of post-colonial Pakistan and what it means to have inherited a fractured homeland.

His practice incorporates interdisciplinary methods, including multimedia installations, digitization of familial artifacts, field trips, oral history documentation, ethnographic research and textile.&#38;nbsp;


A graduate of the Maastricht Institute of Arts, Halar has exhibited extensively across The Netherlands and Belgium, including his ongoing project

”

Dhoongri to Karachi
”









 (2025)

 is an earnest exploration of his grandmother’s migration to post-Partition Karachi, having to sculpt her life from the fragments of a divided homeland, blending restored family archives, intimate interviews, and recreated memories in an effort to collectively remember inherited trauma.

This video work, contirbutes to a larger and ongoing research question of his inherited fractured home - Pakistan. He is currently working on an art publication titled, “Ghar: Volume I”, comprising his field notes, diary scans, maps, and sribbles of home from his trip to Pakistan in the fall of 2023.


Halar is one of the founding members of tu.la.lit, a cross-continental platform for post-colonial co-research through sonic mapping and street culture, alongside his&#38;nbsp; ex-art academy contemporaries.

From Dhoongri to Karachi

 unfolds through hanging textile scrolls, three video screens, scattered heirlooms, and images that carry traces of migration. Printed on handmade rice paper, these images show tender gestures of my grandmother as she visits parts of Karachi where she first settled as a refugee.



 


Excerpts from my film Nani, Karachi and I (2024) appear within the installation, weaving moving image and still image into one rhythm. Central to the work is an old suitcase, releasing two VHS tapes from 2001, my nani’s old passport, photographs and more. 
This project continues my ongoing research into the politics of memory, migration and national amnesia, expanding on Ghar: frames of recollected memories (2023). Through my grandmother’s story - her journey from Mumbai to Karachi after 1947, I think about “Ghar-گھر” (home) as something unstable: a shifting constellation of places, smells, textures, and half-remembered stories.
 
In an effort to make sense of my convoluted ethnic heritage in contemporary Pakistan, I try to reassess the role of an archive, not as a fixed site of preservation, but as something fluid, fragile, activated, sometimes misremembered. The notion of “Ghar” (home) appears in multiple forms: as an actual site, a sonic memory, a lost photograph, a disappeared recipe and a VHS tape. Home becomes an unstable ground I return to through my artistic research, taking the form of this multimedia work.&#38;nbsp;

In October 2024, I was invited to be a part of the Exhibition at Sectie-C in Eindhoven. This was part of the Dutch Design Week, where I presented my project, Ghar: Frames of recollected memories.&#38;nbsp;

This included my film, “Nani, Karachi and I” along with a collection of photographic impressions of my research trip to Pakistan in fall 2023.

Ghar: Frames of recollected memories



My thesis project from the Maastricht Academy of Arts, took&#38;nbsp;the form of a multimedia installation debuted at DISPLAYCED 2024,&#38;nbsp;

C.V. Landbouwbelang (NL).&#38;nbsp; It invites the audience into the journey of recollected, restored and reformed memories of my beloved grandmother, Fareeda Khatoon.

Central to the installation is a short video work documenting my grandmother, a Bombay soul in a post 1947 Karachi as she looks back at her life and identity sculpted from the fragments of a divided homeland. The&#38;nbsp; film is a visual chronicle of Fareeda’s life and my love for her, as the premise involves compiling collective memories through several one-on-one exercises. .

The installation also consists of several archival pieces including expired passports, photographic documents, silverware, and jewelry from my family alongside excerpts of my travel, process, and thoughts from my Journal &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; “گھر کی کتاب : Volume I”.

The Expired Film Experiment no.1 and 2, emerges from my thesis trip to Southern Pakistan in the fall of 2023, In which I chose to seek visual answers to the questions of statelessness, questions of the contemporary Pakistani identity and an investigation into a longing of a home long-lost, by focusing on my grandmother who came to Karachi from Mumbai as a refugee after the 1947 Partition of the Indian motherland. 

Intimate family moments, conversations, and trips are captured in these photographs which have a striking hue of the pink and purple color spectrum, which was the natural result of using expired film to capture these images. These were taken in the metropoli of&#38;nbsp; Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore.

	Nani, Karachi and I

Presented in The Begining exhibition at Maastricht Institue of Arts,"Nani, Karachi and I" is an unscripted film that captures the journey of my Nani as we revisit the old 

neighborhoods of Karachi,&#38;nbsp;

blending together testimonies, archival footage, and the tactile remnants of her life.

 The film moves through her recollections of leaving behind her childhood home in Mumbai after 1947 and beginning life anew as a refugee in the port city of Karachi. The conversations we share—some lighthearted, others profoundly melancholic — form the core of this work.

Traversing the Terrain

Halar built this installation during his participation in a 2 month long research project to map the spirit of Genk, a small city in Flemish Belgium. The exhibition consisted of Plexi Glass Sculptures titled Fluid Obliques and Diary scans of poems written throughout the two month research period tilted “If it is the Answer you seek”&#38;nbsp;and “

गेंक and I”. The first Poem was written as a dialogue between the Halar and the 
city in his native language of Urdu. It 
served as an initial motivation for formulating the observational drawing technique also exhibited titled “Ink Trails”.&#38;nbsp;

thermoformed acrylic

I’ve been in a lot of places where I’ve had to reword myself for. Dilute for. Translate for. Package for.

Where the language of my care, or rage especially when it was political, got measured against institutional thresholds of acceptability. Too raw, and Too personal. Too much, always. Or not enough.

I had to learn how to bend. How to soften the edges of my truth so it could be held in cold hands. But this Class was not that kind of space.

These white walls weren't waiting to be slathered with my eastern tale.
Instead: There was a mat. my mango. and a moment I spoke freely.

Anti-Class - a Carrier Bag of Practices
Anti-Class: A Carrier Bag of Practices grew out of our time together during the Anti-Class residency at B32 in Maastricht. It’s a bundle — of stories, recipes, reflections, and small experiments that held our time there. Each of us contributed something different: fragments from conversations, gestures from shared meals, notes that refused to resolve. I wrote about the spaces where care and politics meet, where language bends under institutional pressure, however something still manages to grow. Food runs through the book as both connector and contradiction. Its a way of being together that, carries memory, complicity, and tenderness all at once. Designed by Sjoerd Beijers and printed at the Jan van Eyck Academie, the book resists hierarchy; you’re meant to open it, untie the string, and read in any direction. It’s available at Limestone Books (Maastricht), San Seriffe (Amsterdam), and Page Not Found (The Hague) .

Yet these micro-practices cannot be separated from macro-scale realities. While we nurture cracks underfoot, Palestinians are forced to navigate cracks in the geography of occupation—moving from one “safe zone” to another, their daily lives constrained by borders and displacement. The ethics of care embedded in tending urban cracks contrast sharply with global structures of violence and extraction. Micro attentiveness cannot replace engagement with injustice, but it can model a relational resilience: small acts of care that expose and contest larger systems of harm.
