Anti-Class Residency
Being part of this cohort in Maastricht was, for me, an unlearning as much as a residency. It asked us to rethink what it means to create and to be in dialogue - outside the frameworks of productivity or presentation that often shape artistic practice.
I came into Anti-Class carrying a long history of translation - the kind that artists from elsewhere know too well. The softening of language, the dilution of feeling, the quiet negotiations needed to make one’s work legible inside institutional spaces. But this residency was not that kind of space. The programme did not focus on a linear trajectory with a polished end project, but instead centre on learning from one another, holding space together, and appreciating open-ended inquiries.

" As an introduction to Anti-Class, we collectively read Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction.” Inspired by her idea of storytelling as a practice of gathering, we imagined the residency as a kind of carrier bag—a shared vessel, holding diverse practices, voices, tools, and stories.
After the reading session, we walked through Hoge Frontenpark towards the fruit and vegetable market, each of us choosing an ingredient to create dumplings: our own edible carrier bags. Some ingredients held personal memories or meanings; others simply caught the eye. In preparing and eating together, we offered parts of ourselves and began to learn more about one another—through food, through stories, through the simple act of sharing. "

Over the past weeks, I’ve taken part in @anticlassresidency with Floris as our duo @_.somae._ . The residency brought artists, academics, gardeners, cooks, and activists together to explore community-led learning beyond institutions.

The residency has been a pivotal moment: a space to explore relational knowledge-making, community-led practices, and ecological attentiveness through food, archives, and artistic research.
It has also allowed us, as somæ, to deepen our collaboration, give form to what has so far lived between us, and situate our practice within a wider community of inquiry and care <3 <3 <3 . "
